☑️ Hazrat Maryam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in Islam: An Icon of Purity and Piety
The honor accorded to Maryam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in Islam is so profound that an entire chapter (Surah) of the Holy Qur'an is named after her: Surah Maryam! Her name is explicitly mentioned in the Qur'an at least 70 times—even a frequency exceeding its mention in the Bible.
Furthermore, the name of Maryam is referenced more often in the Qur’an than the name of any member of Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) family. The revered tradition (Hadith) of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphatically states: "I am the closest of people to Jesus, the son of Mary, in this world and the Hereafter."(Sahih Bukhari). This particular Hadith teaches us the deep bond of brotherhood and spiritual connection that exists among all the Prophets of Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ). Let this spirit of profound love and connection resonate in your own life, and witness how it illuminates the world around you!
✔️ The Unparalleled Courage of Hazrat Maryam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in Islam:
The bravery of Hazrat Maryam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is immeasurable. She endured the pain of childbirth alone, seeking refuge beneath the shade of a palm tree, where Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ) provided her with comfort and sustenance. It was in this moment of vulnerability that a magnificent miracle occurred, affirming her innocence and devotion. The Qur'an recounts the profound moment when the newborn child spoke, defending his mother: (قَالَ إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ آتَانِيَ الْكِتَابَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيًّا) Interpretation of the Meaning (The Divine Statement): "He [the infant] said, 'Indeed, I am the servant of Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ). He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet.'"(Surah Maryam, Ayah 30). This incident underscores Maryam's immense patience and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ) during her most challenging trial, making her an eternal role model for faith and unwavering resolve.
🔶 Jesus (Hazrat Isa روح الله) in Islam: Prophet, Messiah, and Miracle
Hazrat Isa (روح الله) is revered in Islam as a distinguished messenger of Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ), the Messiah (المسيح), and a Prophet of profound miracles. He is also uniquely titled " Ruhullah" (روح الله) which means the Spirit of Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ). The Qur'an narrates the divine comfort and sustenance provided to his mother, Mary (Hazrat Maryam عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), during her distress:(فَنَادَاهَا مِن تَحْتِهَا أَلَّا تَحْزَنِي قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحْتَكِ سَرِيًّا) Interpretation of the Meaning (The Divine Statement): "Then [an angel] called her from beneath her, 'Do not grieve; your Lord has placed beneath you a stream [of water].'"(Surah Maryam, Ayah 24). This miraculous incident teaches us the immense power of patience and divine intervention.
Remember this story during the most challenging times in your life, and find the strength to rise above your difficulties! This divine protection reminds us that we too are safeguarded by the Mercy of Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ). Hold onto this unwavering belief in your daily life, and observe how your challenges become easier to navigate! In a notable Hadith, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) stated: "Every child of Adam is touched by Satan on the day its mother gives birth, except Maryam and her son Isa." (Sahih Bukhari). This Hadith further highlights the unique, divinely protected status granted to both Mary ((Hazrat Maryam عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)) and Jesus (Hazrat Isa روح الله).
🤝 The Bridge of Faith: Jesus and Mary in Islam and Christianity
The shared reverence for Jesus and Mary creates a unique bond between Islam and Christianity. For instance, just as Jesus and Mary are highly popular names in South American countries, the names Isa (Jesus) for boys and Mary (Maryam) for girls are extremely common throughout the Muslim world.
Ahmed Maher Sabek, (a spokesperson for the Muslim Welfare House in London), highlighted this respect, stating: “When we mention the name of Maryam, we add the phrase ‘alaihi wa sallam (عليه السلام),’ which means ‘peace be upon her.’ Maryam is a woman highly revered by Muslims, and those who do not honor her are not considered Muslims.”
🖤 This honor is mirrored in Christian reverence:
Saint Augustine (Christian Theologian) once said: “Mary is the symbol of purity, who surrendered to the will of God.” This sentiment aligns perfectly with Islam, where Mary (Hazrat Maryam عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is seen as a woman uniquely chosen by Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ).
Pope John Paul II stated: “Mary is the model of motherhood, who accepted the miracle through faith.” These words inspire us, demonstrating that purity and faith are common threads across all religions—use this understanding to foster religious goodwill and bring peace!
💜 Theologians also recognize Jesus’ significant role in Islamic tradition:
Christian Scholar Robert Shedinger observed: “Jesus plays a special role in the Islamic tradition, often considered the most important prophet after Muhammad.” This indicates that Jesus's prophethood is honored across all major faiths, which should inspire us toward interfaith harmony.
Leaders like Billy Graham has said: “Jesus is the Prophet of Peace,” which resonates with the Qur'an where Isa (روح الله) is referred to as a symbol of peace.
⚖️ Theological Distinctions: Disagreements regarding Jesus and Mary in Islam and Christianity
Despite the shared reverence, fundamental theological differences exist between Islam and Christianity concerning Jesus and Mary:
📍 The Divinity of Jesus:
For Catholics, the virgin Mary is considered the mother of God (نعوذ بالله), as God manifested in human form through Hazrat Isa (روح الله). For Muslims, however, Prophet Isa (روح الله) is not God; therefore, Hazrat Maryam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is not considered the mother of God (نعوذ بالله).
In Islam, Quran describes the originality and limitless power of Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ). (لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ) Interpretation of the Meaning (The Qur'anic Statement) "He begetteth not, nor is He begotten" (Surah Al-Ikhlas, Ayath 03).
📍Marital Status and Paternity:
In Islam, there is no mention of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), who, according to the Christian Bible, was Mary's betrothed. Conversely, Islam asserts that when the mother of Prophet Isa (روح الله) became pregnant, she was unmarried, thus emphasizing her virginity.
📍 Intercession and Worship:
In Islam, neither Hazrat Isa (روح الله) nor Hazrat Maryam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is viewed as an intercessor or recommender before Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ). They were human beings whom muslims believe should not be prayed to or asked for anything. Muslims believe that only Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ) can help us in this life and the hereafter. The question then is: why would one worship anyone else if Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ) can accomplish everything by itself?
📍 Imagery and Iconography:
In Catholic churches and Christian homes, vehicles, and clothing, various depictions and icons of Mother Mary and Jesus are often seen. However, Islam prohibits the representation of any of Allah’s (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ) Prophets through pictures or statues. Consequently, mosques do not contain images of people. The walls of a mosque are adorned only with Qur'anic verses inscribed in Arabic calligraphy.
📍 The Crucifixion and Death:
The core difference between Catholic doctrine and Islam concerning Jesus/Hazrat Isa (روح الله) lies in the Islamic belief that he is considered a human being and is not referred to as God or the son of Allah (نعوذ بالله).
Additionally, the manner of his death is interpreted differently in the two religions. The Islamic tradition denies the Christian belief in the crucifixion and resurrection of Prophet Isa. Instead, Islam states that while it may have appeared that he was crucified, Allah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ) had actually raised him up to Himself beforehand.
💙 The Enduring Spirit of Respect:
Despite these doctrinal differences, Prophet Isa ( روح الله) remains a profoundly revered and beloved Prophet in Islam. He was not only a teacher but a beacon of light for humanity, a spiritual leader who called people toward the path of truth, patience, and faith.
Nevertheless, Muslims do not celebrate his birthday or Christmas as a festival, because Prophet-love in Islam is expressed through remembrance, adherence to his teachings, and unwavering obedience to Allah's (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ) command.
Conversely, Catholic leaders have long and sincerely acknowledged Islam's deep respect and love for Hazrat Maryam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and Hazrat Isa (روح الله). Many suggest that this mutual respect could be the true bridge for understanding and dialogue between the Christian and Muslim worlds, where the eternal call of humanity can finally meet.
