Islamic and Science-Based Habits For Improving Brain Health

(بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم، والصلاة والسلام على حبيبنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وعلى من اتبع صراطه المستقيم.) In the name of Allah (سبحانه وتعالى)- the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and upon all those who follow his righteous path.

Dear Readers,

(السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته.) May Peace, Mercy, and Blessings of Allah be upon you.

The human brain is a priceless gift and a supreme blessing bestowed upon us by Almighty Allah. Without this vital organ, we are unable to think, make sound decisions, or even dedicate ourselves to worship with a sound body and mind. Modern science has recently alerted us to the fact that certain detrimental habits—such as insufficient sleep, skipping the morning meal, and chronic dehydration—are gradually destroying our cognitive functions. Yet, all praise is due to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) for Islam provided us with the golden rules of holistic health thousands of years ago!

Islamic and Science-Based Habits For Improving Brain Health

Allah Almighty instructs us in the Noble Quran: (وَأَنفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ ۛ وَأَحْسِنُوا ۛ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ) "And spend in the way of Allah, and do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands, and do good. Indeed, Allah loves those who do good." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:195). The Quran and the authentic traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) contain beautiful instructions for a lifestyle that safeguards brain health, grants profound peace of mind, and beautifies life itself.

In this dedicated article, I will share with you several health habits that have been validated by both contemporary scientific research (such as studies from the Harvard Medical School) and established Islamic teachings. I will provide clear references from the Quran and Prophetic tradition (السنة) alongside each habit, making it easy for you to integrate these practices into your life, Allah Willing (إن شاء الله). By internalizing these habits, your body will gain strength, your mind will achieve tranquility, your sustenance will be blessed, your acts of worship will be more acceptable, and overall prosperity will be enjoyed.

I am confident that after reading this analysis, you will affirm to yourself: "All gratitude and thanks are due to Allah for such a profound and beneficial education—All praise belongs to Allah (الحمد لله)!" Let us commence this journey of learning with the Name of Allah (بسم الله).

💚 Sunnah-Based 'Restorative Sleep that Relieves Fatigue:

The Almighty Creator (الخالق العظيم) proclaims in the Holy Book: (وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا) "And We have made your sleep a rest." (Surah An-Naba: 78-9). In the Islamic tradition, sleep is often referred to as a "minor death," serving as a vital period of rest for both the body and the mind.

It is during sleep that the brain actively removes toxins and engages in the creation of new cells. Therefore, ensure proper oxygen supply to the body, and it is advised not to cover the head completely during sleep. Contemporary scientific research indicates that less than 7 hours of sleep impairs the function of brain cells, elevates depression levels, weakens memory, contributes to the destruction of neural cells, makes one irritable, and causes a loss of focus. Furthermore, remaining awake late into the night can induce mental stress and severely disrupt hormonal balance.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) disliked engaging in idle chatter after the 'Isha (العشاء) prayer unless absolutely necessary and would promptly retire for the night. He conveyed that "Sustenance is distributed during the time of the Fajr (الفجر) prayer." (Musnad Ahmad: 3933).

It is a deeply emphasized practice (Sunnah) of the Prophet (ﷺ) to perform ablution (الوضوء) before going to bed and to lie down on the right side. Consequently, make it a habit to go to bed before 10 PM and recite the prayer for sleeping: (اَللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا‏) "O Allah! In Your name I die and in Your name I live." Wake up for the Fajr (الفجر) prayer at dawn—this practice is essential for keeping the brain refreshed! It is beneficial to commence the day's main work approximately 20 to 30 minutes after completing the prayer.

💚 The Divine Favor of Water Bestowed by Allah:

Our brain composition is approximately 75% water. Adequate water intake plays a crucial role in enhancing physical performance, positively influencing mood and mental state, facilitating optimal blood circulation, ensuring nutrient delivery, removing toxins, and maintaining the vitality of brain cells. Consequently, failing to consume sufficient water can lead to the shrinkage of brain tissue and a marked reduction in the capacity for sound decision-making.

In the Quran and the Prophetic Tradition (Hadith), numerous guidelines highlight the immense blessing of water and specify the proper etiquette for its consumption. Alongside the principle of moderate eating, ensuring sufficient hydration is equally essential for overall health. The Prophet (ﷺ) instructed us to drink water slowly, pausing three times, a practice which modern scientific understanding affirms is highly beneficial for digestion and long-term health.

💚 Adopt the Practice of Halal and Nutritious Food, Avoid Overeating:

The Prophet (ﷺ) precisely specified the measure of food intake, which stands as the foremost advice in modern health science. He stated: "Fill one-third of the stomach with food, one-third with water, and leave one-third empty for breathing. Overeating makes a person lazy." (Tirmidhi).

The paramount instruction in Islam concerning food consumption is moderation. Saying 'Bismillah (بسم الله)' before eating and utilizing the right hand for consumption are vital practices according to the Sunnah. Incorporate a variety of nutritious items into your daily diet, such as fresh vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, grains (e.g., rice, bread, barley, brown rice), milk, eggs, fish, and meat.

Strictly avoid excessive sugary foods, junk food, smoking, alcohol, and overly spiced dishes. Excess fat intake has been linked to reduced brain function and an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease, as it can diminish blood flow to the brain. Furthermore, maintain distance from adulterated and expired food products.

💚 Commence the Day with a Blessed Breakfast:

In the Islamic tradition, the morning hours are considered profoundly blessed. As stated in the Hadith: "O Allah, bless the morning for my Ummah." (Musnad Ahmad). Consuming the morning meal helps stabilize blood sugar levels, ensuring timely and effective brain function. It furnishes energy for the entirety of the day, initiates the metabolism, and contributes to reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, it assists significantly in weight management, as skipping the morning meal can lead to excessive hunger later, increasing the tendency to consume high-calorie items.

Neglecting the morning meal can also precipitate health issues such as elevated blood pressure and migraines. This highlights why the pre-dawn meal (السحور) is designated as a blessed meal during fasting days. Following the Sunnah, commencing the day with highly nutritious foods such as dates or milk is considered the optimal method. We recommend choosing a breakfast comprising whole-grain bread (such as red flour bread), oats, fruits, and eggs—these are highly effective brain-nourishing foods.

💚 Cultivating Piety (التقوق) in the Heart and Keeping Positive Mode:

Cultivating Piety (التقوق) in the heart and maintaining a good opinion of Allah signifies consistently remembering the Creator with consciousness, adhering to His commands and prohibitions, and placing complete trust in Him. Through this commitment, an individual can attain the pleasure of Allah, be secured from dangers, and receive provision from sources they could never have imagined. The Almighty Allah decreed: (وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمْ لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ ۖ وَلَئِن كَفَرْتُمْ إِنَّ عَذَابِي لَشَدِيدٌ) "And when your Lord decreed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you are ungrateful, indeed, My punishment is severe.'" (Surah Ibrahim: 7).

Negative thinking is known to damage the hippocampus region of the brain, leading to reduced memory function and the accumulation of toxins. Counteract this potential brain damage with frequent repentance (الاستغفار) and good deeds. Keep your brain healthy and functional by establishing regular prayers (صلاة). Make it a habit to express gratitude for blessings several times throughout the day.

💚 Physical Exercise in the Light of the Sunnah:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stated: "A strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak believer." (Sahih Muslim). He (ﷺ) himself frequently sought refuge in Allah from laziness and indolence.

To engage in physical activity in the light of the Sunnah, one must first establish the purity of intention (نية), where the primary aim is to become healthy and strong solely for the purpose of being better able to perform the worship of Allah (عبادة). Physical activities sanctioned by the Sunnah, such as sports like archery, horse racing, running, and swimming, may be pursued, as the Prophet (ﷺ) himself engaged in and encouraged such activities.

Furthermore, walking to the mosque for the five daily obligatory prayers provides an easily attainable and immensely rewarding means of daily exercise. It has been mentioned that for every step taken while walking to the mosque for the Friday (الجمعة) prayer, the reward equivalent to a year of fasting and standing in prayer is granted (Tirmidhi, Hadith 496).

💚 Establishing Close Relationships with Believers: :

Humans are inherently social creatures. Almighty Allah did not create mankind to live in isolation; rather, He commanded them to build a beautiful society through mutual cooperation, counsel, love, and kindness. For this reason, "Righteous Company"—that is, association with virtuous people—has gained special prominence in Islam.  Loneliness Increases Opportunity for evil (شيطان).

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of the perfume seller and the blacksmith." This implies that good company increases faith, while bad company can undermine it. The analogy that the fox catches the sheep that becomes separated from the flock carries profound meaning. The individual who becomes isolated from the congregation (الجماعة) is the most vulnerable target for the attacks of evil (شيطان). This is why Islam does not encourage unnecessary loneliness. While engaging in worship in solitude for a short period may be Sunnah if required, prolonged loneliness has been forbidden by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Isolation weakens the human mind, escalates anxiety, and opens the door to receiving the evil counsel of Satan.

Attending the congregation in the mosque, participating in gatherings for Islamic knowledge, maintaining good relations with family, exhibiting excellent conduct towards neighbors, getting involved in charitable works within the community, and choosing righteous friends—all of these practices counteract the poison of loneliness and guide the servant toward the path of goodness.

Brain health is not a mere luxury—it is the fundamental basis for one's faith, lifestyle, knowledge, decisions, and actions. The practices that modern science now recognizes as "brain-boosting"—such as remembrance of Allah (الذكر), moderate eating, adequate sleep, positive thinking, righteous company, regular physical exertion, and adopting moderation—have all been clearly prescribed and emphasized in the Quran and the Sunnah. These are not just mere habits—they represent a perfect synergy of "Divine Guidance" and scientific truth aimed at protecting the human brain.  Let's work together to support those in need.
