How to Mastering Self-Control through the Remembrance of Allah

1. The Power of Prayer (الصلاة):

The divine promise enshrined within the Quran, 'And your Lord says, 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you.' Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.' (Surah Al-Mumin, 40:60), stands as a testament to the profound efficacy of supplication (dua). This is not merely a call to ritual; it is an invitation to a direct, transformative dialogue with the Almighty, a dialogue that shapes our very existence.

The Power of Prayer (الصلاة)

As the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) articulated, 'Ask Allah for His favor, for Allah loves to be asked, and the best of worship is to wait for relief from Allah.' (Sunan Ibn Majah). This prophetic guidance illuminates the essence of supplication: a persistent, unwavering reliance on Allah's mercy, a cultivation of hope that transcends the limitations of our worldly circumstances.

Furthermore, the insights of contemporary research resonate with the timeless wisdom of our tradition. Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a pioneer in mindfulness-based stress reduction, observes that 'Regular prayer can lead to changes in brain structure and function, promoting emotional regulation and resilience. This is similar to the effect of regular prayer on ones psyche.' This convergence of scientific observation and spiritual insight underscores the holistic benefits of supplication, affirming its role in fostering both inner tranquility and outward strength.

The Power of Prayer (الصلاة)

Thus, let us embrace supplication as a cornerstone of our lives, a practice that not only fulfills a divine command but also unlocks a reservoir of inner peace, emotional fortitude, and unwavering reliance on the All-Knowing, the All-Merciful.

2. Practice the Quran (القرآن الكريم) and Dhikr (الذكر) or Religious Articles:

The Quran, a divine beacon illuminating the path to inner peace, declares, 'Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.' (Surah Ar-Ra'd, 13:28).

This verse unveils the profound calming and reassuring effect of Dhikr, a practice that anchors the heart in the remembrance of the Almighty.

Practice the Quran (القرآن الكريم) and Dhikr (الذكر) every day

Reinforcing this profound connection, the Hadith Qudsi narrates, 'Allah says: 'I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than that. And if he comes to Me a handspan, I come to him an arm's length; and if he comes to Me an arm's length, I come to him a fathom's length; and if he comes to Me walking, I come to him running.'' (Hadith Qudsi, narrated by Muslim).
This divine affirmation underscores the reciprocal relationship between the believer and their Creator, where even a small step towards remembrance is met with boundless grace and closeness.

Furthermore, contemporary neuroscience research echoes the timeless wisdom of our tradition. Studies have demonstrated that regular meditation, a practice sharing similarities with Dhikr and Quran recitation, can significantly enhance cognitive function, increase attention span, and foster emotional regulation. This convergence of scientific discovery and spiritual insight affirms the holistic benefits of daily engagement with the Quran and Dhikr.

We can unlock a reservoir of peace that transcends the transient chaos of the world, nurturing a heart assured in the presence of its Creator.

3. The Sunnah or Scientific Balanced Diet:

Islamic scholars, such as Imam Ash-Shafi'i and Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya (رحمه الله), have taught that overeating can weaken both the mind and heart. To stay spiritually alert and physically light, it is important to eat a little less than you feel full, especially during the night.

The Quran emphasizes moderation in all aspects of life, including eating, "And eat and drink, but do not be extravagant. Indeed, He does not like those who are extravagant." (Sura Al Araf, 7:31).

The Sunnah of Balanced Diet

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasized the importance of controlling one's appetite, "The son of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must (fill it), then let him reserve one-third for his food, one-third for his drink, and one-third for his breath." (Sunan Ibn Majah)

Therefore, let us cultivate a disciplined approach to eating, adhering to the Sunnah of consuming a maximum of three wholesome meals daily. Avoid the transient allure of processed and street foods, which often cloud the mind and weigh down the body. Instead, when hunger arises between meals, turn to the blessed nourishment of dates and less expensive juicy fruits depending on availability, mentioned in our sacred texts and known for their revitalizing properties. These foods are rich in nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants, which contribute to overall health.

The Sunnah of Balanced Diet

Dr. David Kessler (Former FDA Commissioner, Author of "The End of Overeating") exhibits the impact of processed foods on the brain's reward system, showing how they are designed to trigger overconsumption and addiction. This supports the idea of avoiding "junk food".  These are designed to cause people to over consume them.
Numerous studies in nutritional science highlight the negative impacts of excessive calorie intake, particularly from processed foods, on health. This includes increased risks of obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.

Let's transform our eating habits into an act of worship, a testament to our commitment to a life of moderation and spiritual excellence.

4. Balancing Sleep and Spiritual Proximity:

Islam teaches a harmonious approach to life, advocating for a balance between rest and worship. It is not about depriving oneself of sleep entirely but about integrating worship into one's routine in a way that nurtures both body and soul. This balance allows believers to draw closer to Allah while maintaining their physical and mental well-being.

Balancing Sleep and Spiritual Proximity

The Quran emphasizes the virtue of nighttime prayer (Tahajjud) as a source of spiritual elevation. As highlighted in Surah Al-Isra (17:79): "And during a part of the night, pray Tahajjud beyond what is obligatory for you; it may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station." This verse points to the spiritual rewards that come from dedicating a portion of the night to worship.

Contemporary research, like the work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn on mindfulness, shows that focused practices similar to Tahajjud enhance brain activity, fostering emotional calmness and inner peace. Additionally, sleep studies recognize the value of brief wakeful moments during the night for productive reflection. Together, these insights reaffirm the profound physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of aligning one’s routine with this timeless practice, enabling Muslims to find tranquility and deepen their connection with Allah.

5. The Value of Silence and Thoughtful Communication:

Before uttering any comment, pause and contemplate: 'Is there any potential harm in remaining silent? Is this utterance truly necessary?' If the answer is 'no,' then let us heed the counsel of our predecessors and refrain from speaking.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, " "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent." (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

The Value of Silence and Thoughtful Communication

Imam Al-Ghazali, (رحمه الله), eloquently stated, 'The tongue is a small organ, yet it can bring about immense calamities.' This profound wisdom underscores the critical need to exercise restraint in our speech, recognizing that words, once uttered, can have lasting and often detrimental consequences.

Imam Nawawi, (رحمه الله), emphasized, 'Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.'

Victor Frankl (Psychiatrist, Holocaust Survivor, Author of "Man's Search for Meaning") added, "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." This concept of pausing before responding resonates with the Islamic practice of reflecting before speaking, allowing for thoughtful and controlled communication.

This practice of guarding the tongue is not merely about avoiding harmful speech; it's about cultivating inner peace and spiritual refinement. By mastering our words, we master a crucial aspect of ourselves, paving the way for clearer communication, stronger relationships, and a heart more attuned to the remembrance of Allah.

6. Revitalizing Your Day with Sunnah and Science:

"The dawn holds a unique barakah, a blessing bestowed upon those who seize its potential." As the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) implored, "O Allah, bless my nation in their early morning." (Sunan Ibn Majah, 2236; Abu Dawood, 2606; Tirmidhi, 1212 – Hasan).
He (ﷺ) and his noble companions exemplified this, often engaging in dhikr and reflection after Fajr until sunrise, as narrated by Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) in Sahih Muslim (670).

"This is not mere tradition; it's a blueprint for optimal living." Modern neuroscience echoes this wisdom. Dr. Matthew Walker, a leading sleep expert, highlights how waking early and embracing morning light regulates our sleep-wake cycle, elevates mood-enhancing neurochemicals, and mitigates stress. This scientific understanding aligns seamlessly with the prophetic emphasis on the morning's blessings.

Furthermore, recognize the revitalizing power of the qaylulah, a practice the Prophet (ﷺ) encouraged, stating, "Take a nap (Kaylulah), for indeed the devils do not take naps." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2768 – Hasan). Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) further narrated the Prophet’s (ﷺ) guidance to observe Siwak, take an afternoon nap (Kaylulah), and delay the Isha prayer. (Musnad Ahmad, 7987 – Sahih).

Revitalizing Your Day with Sunnah and Science

Dr. Sara Mednick, a renowned sleep researcher, confirms that a short nap (10-20 minutes) acts as a cognitive power boost, enhancing learning, performance, mood, and daytime energy. "This is not simply a rest, it's a strategic revitalization."

Therefore, let us integrate these profound insights, both from our sacred tradition and contemporary science, into our daily lives. By embracing the barakah of the dawn and the rejuvenating power of the qaylulah, we elevate our physical and spiritual well-being, unlocking our full potential as believers and productive contributors to society. Let us rise, not just with the sun, but with a renewed commitment to a life of purpose and excellence.

7. Making the Best Use of Social Media:

Making Good Use of Social Media

"Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do. And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts." (Sura Al-Muminun, 24:30-31)

This verse is the primary basis for the Islamic concept of lowering the gaze. It mention social media specifically, it emphasizes the importance of controlling what we see to maintain purity and avoid temptation.
This verse applies the same principle to believing women too.

Hadith References: "O Ali, the eyes commit zina (الزنا), do not follow a glance with a glance. The first glance is allowed to you, but not the second."
This Hadith warns against prolonged or repeated gazing at things that are not permissible. (Sahih Muslim)

Using it for beneficial purposes, such as: Sharing knowledge and information, Connecting with family and friends, Promoting good deeds etc. and avoiding harmful content, such as gossip, slander, pornography and misinformation.

The research result shows that uncontrolled viewing of such material can have a very negative impact on ones life. This is also a strong correlation to the Islamic teaching of lowering the gaze.

8. Keeping Company with Righteous People:

The Quran, a timeless guide for believers, articulates in Surah At-Tawbah (9:119), 'O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.' This divine instruction underscores the profound impact of our social circles, emphasizing that association with the truthful is a pathway to righteousness and spiritual growth.

Keeping Company with Righteous People

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), in his profound wisdom, illustrated this principle with the parable of the musk bearer and the blower of bellows. 'The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of the bearer of musk and the blower of bellows. The bearer of musk will either give you some or you will buy some from him, or you will find a good smell from him. As for the blower of bellows, he will either burn your clothes or you will find a bad smell from him.' (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). This vivid analogy highlights the undeniable influence of our companions, emphasizing that righteous company is not merely a preference, but a vital component of spiritual well-being.

Furthermore, contemporary research in positive psychology affirms the enduring wisdom of these sacred teachings. Studies consistently demonstrate that robust social connections and a profound sense of belonging are foundational to psychological well-being. A strong support network not only amplifies feelings of happiness but also mitigates the debilitating effects of loneliness and depression.

By surrounding ourselves with individuals who embody truthfulness, integrity, and a deep connection with the Divine, we create an environment conducive to personal growth, spiritual elevation, and enduring well-being.
