Early Signs and Symptoms of Kidney Failure

 🔶 What Are the Kidneys?

The kidneys are vital organs that work silently to keep the body healthy. They often become damaged without causing early pain or noticeable symptoms, which is why kidney disease is frequently detected late.

The human body has two kidneys, located on either side of the waist, just below the rib cage. Their main role is to filter waste, excess fluid, and toxins from the blood.

🔶 Main Functions of the Kidneys in the Human Body:

The kidneys perform several life-saving functions that keep the body balanced and healthy:
✔️ Filter and purify the blood by removing toxins and waste products
✔️ Maintain proper water and salt balance in the body
✔️ Help regulate blood pressure by controlling fluid levels
✔️ Produce erythropoietin, a hormone essential for red blood cell formation
✔️ Activate vitamin D, which keeps bones strong and healthy

🔶 Common Early Symptoms and Warning Signs of Kidney Failure:

Kidney failure often develops silently. In the early stages, symptoms may be mild or unnoticed. However, as kidney function declines, certain warning signs begin to appear. If you experience any of the following symptoms, do not ignore them—consult a qualified doctor promptly.

🔎 Changes in Urine Output (An Early Sign of Kidney Failure):

A sudden change in urine output is one of the earliest and most important warning signs of kidney problems. Normally, the kidneys filter waste and excess fluid in balanced amounts. When kidney function declines, urine output may become unusually low or, in some cases, abnormally high.

  • Additional warning signs may include:
  • Strong or foul-smelling urine
  • Foamy urine
  • Burning during urination
  • Changes in urine color

These symptoms are often ignored as temporary issues, dehydration, or infection. However, from a medical perspective, they may be early indicators of kidney disease or kidney failure and should not be overlooked.

  🔎 Foamy or Bloody Urine:

The presence of excessive foam or blood in urine is a significant warning sign of kidney problems. Foamy urine often occurs due to protein leakage in the urine, which may indicate damage to the kidney’s filtering system. Normally, urine is light yellow in color. However, kidney disease may cause urine to appear dark yellow, brown, reddish, or milky.

  • Dark urine may suggest dehydration or poor waste removal
  • Reddish or pink urine can indicate blood in the urine

These changes may be linked to kidney infection, kidney stones, or more serious underlying conditions. Although many people dismiss these symptoms as temporary, medical science strongly advises that they should never be ignored.

  🔎 Frequent Nighttime Urination:

Waking up repeatedly at night to urinate—known as nocturia—can be an early warning sign of kidney problems. Under normal conditions, the kidneys reduce urine production during sleep. When kidney function becomes impaired, this regulation is lost, leading to frequent nighttime urination.

Many people assume this symptom is related to aging or drinking too much water before bed. However, from a medical perspective, persistent nocturia may indicate kidney disease or declining kidney function and should not be ignored.

🔎 Swelling of the Face, Eyes, Feet, or Ankles:

Swelling in different parts of the body can be an early warning sign of kidney problems. When the kidneys fail to remove excess water and salt from the body, fluid begins to accumulate, leading to swelling of the face, under the eyes, feet, or ankles.

Many people notice puffy eyes in the morning or heavy, swollen feet after long periods of sitting or standing. These signs are often dismissed as fatigue or routine swelling.

  🔎 High Blood Pressure:

High blood pressure is not only a major cause of kidney disease—it can also be an important warning sign of kidney failure. When the kidneys are unable to remove excess salt and water effectively, fluid builds up in the bloodstream, leading to elevated blood pressure.

In some cases, blood pressure remains poorly controlled despite regular medication, which may indicate underlying kidney problems. From a medical perspective, long-term uncontrolled high blood pressure accelerates kidney damage, creating a harmful cycle that worsens kidney function over time.

  🔎 Persistent Fatigue and Weakness:

Unusual and persistent fatigue can be an early warning sign of kidney problems. When the kidneys fail to remove waste and toxins from the blood effectively, these harmful substances accumulate, leading to constant tiredness, weakness, and reduced stamina.

People may experience shortness of breath even after mild activity, difficulty concentrating, or a feeling of exhaustion throughout the day. Additionally, impaired kidney function can cause anemia, which further worsens fatigue. These symptoms are often dismissed as stress, overwork, or lack of sleep. However, from a medical perspective, ongoing fatigue should never be ignored, as it may signal early kidney disease or kidney failure.

🔎 Loss of Appetite and Nausea:

Persistent loss of appetite and nausea can be early warning signs of kidney problems. When the kidneys are unable to remove waste and toxins effectively, these harmful substances build up in the blood. This toxin accumulation can lead to reduced appetite, nausea, and a metallic taste in the mouth.

In some cases, vomiting may occur even after eating small amounts of food. These symptoms are often mistaken for gastritis or temporary digestive issues. However, from a medical perspective, ongoing appetite loss and nausea should not be ignored, as they may indicate declining kidney function or kidney failure.

  🔎 Dry and Itchy Skin:

Persistent dry and itchy skin may be an early warning sign of kidney problems. When the kidneys are unable to remove waste products and excess phosphorus effectively, these substances accumulate in the body and can affect the skin. As a result, the skin may become unusually dry and itchy, even without visible rashes or allergies.

In many cases, the itching does not improve with regular moisturizers. This symptom is often dismissed as a common skin condition, but from a medical perspective, long-lasting dryness and unexplained itching can indicate declining kidney function or kidney disease.

🔶 Effective Ways to Keep Your Kidneys Healthy and Prevent Kidney Disease:

Keeping your kidneys healthy is not only about treatment—it is the result of daily lifestyle choices and awareness. Medical science emphasizes prevention as the key to protecting kidney function. Likewise, Islam teaches us to care for our bodies, as the body is a trust (أمانة) from Allah.

By adopting the following healthy habits and seeking timely medical advice, we can protect our kidneys and preserve this blessing entrusted to us.

✅ Drink Enough Clean Water for Healthy Kidneys:

Adequate hydration is essential for keeping the kidneys healthy. Drinking enough clean water helps the kidneys filter toxins and waste products from the blood more efficiently. Proper hydration also reduces the risk of kidney stones and urinary tract problems.

However, excessive water intake can also be harmful. It is important to drink water in moderation, based on your body’s needs, physical activity level, and medical condition.

✅ Reduce Salt and Processed Foods to Protect Your Kidneys:

Excessive salt intake places extra strain on the kidneys and contributes to high blood pressure. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of kidney damage. Diets rich in processed and fast foods—such as chips, packaged snacks, instant meals, and restaurant foods—often contain hidden salt that harms kidney health over time.

✅ Control Diabetes and Blood Pressured:

Uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of kidney failure worldwide. Persistently high blood sugar and elevated blood pressure gradually damage the kidneys’ delicate filtering system. Regular medical check-ups, timely blood tests, and taking prescribed medications consistently play a vital role in protecting kidney function.

✅ Use Painkillers Carefully to Protect Your Kidneys

Long-term or excessive use of painkillers can cause serious kidney damage. Certain pain medications—especially non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)—can reduce blood flow to the kidneys and gradually impair their function.

These medicines should be used only when necessary and under medical guidance. Avoid self-medication, and consult a doctor if pain persists.

✅ Maintain Regular Prayer and Light Exercise for Kidney Health:

Regular physical movement plays an important role in keeping the kidneys healthy. Prayer (صلاح) involves gentle, repeated movements that promote blood circulation and flexibility. In addition, walking or light exercise for at least 30 minutes daily helps control blood pressure, blood sugar, and body weight—all of which protect kidney function.

The kidneys work silently to cleanse our body. Even when they begin to fail, they often do not cause obvious symptoms at first. Ignoring early warning signs is one of our greatest mistakes.
From a medical perspective, these are early warning signs of kidney disease. From an Islamic perspective, they are a reminder from Allah to care for the body, which is a trust (أمانة).

By becoming aware today, undergoing regular health check-ups, and adopting a healthy lifestyle, many serious complications can be prevented. Take care of yourself, educate your loved ones, and strive for a healthy and blessed life by protecting your kidneys.
