Dear Readers,
(السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته.) May Peace, Mercy, and Blessings of Allah be upon you.
How the universe was created—this question has been the center of curiosity of thinking people since the dawn of human civilization. The description of the creation period has emerged in various forms in religious texts, ancient anecdotes, and discussions of modern science. In the meantime, some descriptions in the Quran have caught the attention of many researchers and have also raised several fundamental questions.
Below, we present those much-discussed questions in a more clear, analytical language—
❤️ Creation of the Universe in Six Days or Eight Days—Numerical Contradictions in the Creation Description of the Quran
In several verses of the Quran, the creation of the heavens and the earth is described in the scope of “six days.” Again, if we analyze the linguistic structure of Surah Ha-Mim , the total calculation of the same creation period stands at “eight days.”
Since these two different descriptions exist in the same book, for many researchers this is not just a numerical discrepancy—but an important theological question: How can there be two contradictory descriptions in the same divine message?
💜 If Allah can create anything in an instant with just one command, “Be” (كُنْ), then why is a period of six or eight days necessary?
This question has given rise to discussion among many thinkers and Islamic researchers.
💚 Modern cosmology provides a very clear and mathematical explanation of the origin of the universe. As a result, the question arises—are the periods and creation processes mentioned in religious descriptions consistent with any scientific logic, or are they basically just a continuation of the mythological concepts of ancient civilizations?
💙 Day and night before the creation of the sun and stars—isn’t it scientific?
In the Quranic description, it is seen that day, night, mountains, and even plants were created before the sun and stars. But according to the basic laws of modern physics and astronomy, “day” and “night” only make sense when a planet revolves around a star and rotates on its axis. This discrepancy has prompted many researchers to ask—are these descriptions based on real astronomical observations, or are they myths of earlier civilizations?
In this article, we will analyze the seemingly contradictory claims about the duration of the creation of the universe in the Holy Quran (six days versus eight days) from the perspective of a scientific Islamic scholar. We will first observe where the fundamental theoretical conflict lies between the Quranic concept of “creation in six days” and the theory of “Be, and it was” (كون فا ياكون), and how the linguistic calculation of “eight days” in Surah Ha-Meem presents a unique piece of information.
This study will examine, using scientific criteria, whether this duration of “six days” or “eight days” can be applied to any physical reality. Finally, a comprehensive explanation of these periods and creation processes based on modern cosmology and theology will be provided, in shaa Allah (إن شاء الله). Today's article is organized in a detailed manner—the whole matter will be clear and meaningful when read to the end.
🟥 Creation of the Universe in Six Days or Eight Days—An Explanation of the Numerical Contradiction in the Creation Account of the Quran:
Many times in the Quran [Surah Al-A'raf (7:54), Surah Yunus (10:3), Surah Hud (11:7), Surah Al-Furqan (25:59), Surah As-Sajdah (32:4), Surah Qaf (50:38), Surah Al-Hadid (57:4)] Allah has declared, in essence, —“The heavens and the earth were created in six days.”
But the word “8 days” is not directly mentioned anywhere in the Quran. From the summary of verses 9 to 12 of Surah Ha-Meem Sajdah, it seems that the heavens and the earth were created in 8 days. Yet some people incorrectly interpret the mathematical addition as [2 days (earth) + 4 days (sustenance) + 2 days (heaven)] = 8 days.
But in Arabic grammar, verse 41:10 (فِي أَرْبَعَةِ أَيَّامٍ) means…“and so on in four days” not “four more days”.
So four days = 2 days (earth/foundation) + sustenance = 4 in total.
Result: 4 (foundation of the earth) + 2 (heaven) = 6 in total, which is completely consistent with the other seven verses.
Actually, according to the Arabic linguistic structure, this is an explanation of 6 days, not a claim of 8 days. This is the overall period of creation, a universal divine scheme.
For example, if someone says: It took 50 days to build the house and 5 days to paint it. The question is, did it take a total of 55 days or 50 days to build the house?
Primary school students may say 55 days, but college students will say 50 days. But yes, if more than 2 days had been written in verse 9 or 12 or more than 4 days in verse 10, then it would not have been possible to overlap in any way. See the miracle of the Quran!...
🟪 If Allah can create anything in an instant with just one command, “Be” (كُنْ), then why is a period of time like six days or eight days necessary? Explanation:
The concept of time is for humans. Of course, Allah could have created in an instant if He wanted. But through the six-day step-by-step creation, He has taught mankind that great work is completed with patience, planning, and gradualness.
Allah is above time. But humans live within the limitations of time. Therefore, the process of creation is described in terms of time so that humans can understand it.
I know that there is wisdom in every work of Allah. Through the six days of creation, He established the balance, law and order of the universe. This description inspires people to think about the complexity of creation, the majesty and the vastness of Allah's power. This is not a limitation of Allah's power, but a manifestation of His wisdom.
🟩 Are the periods and processes of creation mentioned in religious descriptions consistent with any scientific logic, or are they basically just a continuation of the mythological ideas of ancient civilizations? Analysis of this query.
Modern Muslim scientists say that the verses of the Quran give clues about the origin and nature of the universe that are surprisingly similar to the discoveries of the Big Bang theory and modern cosmology.
☑️ Separation from a single state
Big Bang theory: The universe began from a tiny point, which exploded and expanded.
Quran: "The heavens and the earth were joined together, then We separated them." (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:30)
Scientists say that this verse is surprisingly consistent with the initial singularity of the universe and its subsequent expansion.
☑️ Expansion of the universe
Science: Edwin Hubble's observations show that galaxies are moving away, the universe is constantly expanding.
Quran: "We have created the heavens with power, and indeed, We are expanding it." (Surah Az-Zariyyat 51:47)
Modern Muslim researchers interpret this as a direct indication of the expansion of the universe.
☑️ Relativity of time
Science: According to Einstein's theory of relativity, time flows differently in different states.
Quran: "A day with you is as a thousand years with Allah." (Surah Al-Hajj 22:47) "A day is as fifty thousand years." (Surah Al-Ma'arij 70:4)
Muslim scientists say this is similar to the concept of relativity of time.
☑️ Life originates from water
Science: In biology, life is not possible without water.
Quran: “We created every living thing from water.” (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:30) This highlights the importance of water as a basic element of life.
These examples show that the Quran is primarily intended to convey spiritual teachings and purposes, while science explains processes and evidence. When viewed together, it is clear that science and religion answer different questions, but it is possible to understand each other in a complementary way.
🟦 Before the creation of the sun and stars, day and night—isn't it scientific? Scientific analysis of this:
The first few hundred thousand years after the Big Bang: The universe was completely dark. This is called the Cosmic Dark Ages. Even though light was produced at that time, it could not spread freely, because the universe was dense and hot.
Recombination Era (~3.8 lakh years later): Electrons and protons came together to form hydrogen atoms. Then the universe became transparent and light began to spread freely. This was the first manifestation of "light" in the universe.
The next stage: Light became more obvious through the formation of stars and galaxies. Before this, darkness and light existed in the universe in phases.
The Quran says: "He created the heavens and the earth and determined the darkness and the light." (Surah Al-An'am 6:1) Here, "darkness" and "light" have been interpreted by many scholars as symbols of the initial state of the universe.
The mention of light and darkness before the sun and stars can be compared to the Dark Ages and Recombination Era of modern cosmology.
The periodic state of light and darkness is the result of the early physics of the universe. It is the manifestation of God's power in symbolic language for humans. Both views accept that there was a cycle of light and darkness before the sun and stars.
The periodic state of light and darkness in the early universe is proven by modern cosmology. The Quranic description is symbolically consistent with this reality, which has come to strengthen human thought and faith.
As Islamic scholars, we conclude that the 'six days' are a symbolic description of God's plan and order, which indicates the six main stages of cosmic evolution discovered by scientists. The Quran recognizes both the ability of instantaneous creation (كُنْ فَيَكُونُ) and the process of periodic creation (في ستاتو إيام). These two statements are just two different aspects of Allah's wisdom and order of creation.
